Contract a Summer Cold? Effective Strategies for Soothing Your Symptoms

Few things are worse than sitting inside the house sniffling on a beautiful summer day. Although it is associated with winter, the cold virus exists all year long, and summer also involves traveling and socializing that can make it easier for germs to be spread. Contracting a summer cold may make you feel miserable, but there are many things that you can do to encourage faster healing and ease your symptoms.
Learn How to Soothe a Sore Throat
A scratchy throat is one of the first symptoms to appear when you catch a summer cold, and dealing with a sore throat makes it hard to eat, drink and speak comfortably. Over-the-counter pain relievers work well on soothing sore throats and you can make a soothing rinse at home with just warm water and a teaspoon of salt. Clearing up sinus drainage also helps with easing soreness, so make sure to check with your physician to find out if you have an infection that requires antibiotics or just a virus that will clear on its own.
Use a Cold Compress for Eye Irritation
Red, itchy eyes are also a hallmark sign of summer colds. You may also find that your eyes are crusty or weepy if you experience a great deal of sinus congestion. Begin your day by gently washing the outside of your eyes, and use a cold, wet washcloth to cover them up if you find that the redness and swelling get to be too much. An eye wash can also help rinse away any allergens that may make this cold symptom worse. While your eyes are irritated and red, try to avoid wearing makeup or applying heavy lotions that could further irritate the delicate eye area.
Try Aromatherapy for Sinus Congestion
There are many prescription and over-the-counter sinus medications that can help clear up congestion, but it is important to speak to your physician and pharmacists to find out which one will work best for your body. Sinus congestion can involve nasal stuffiness or a runny nose. You may also have pain across your cheeks or forehead if the facial sinuses become clogged. In addition to medication, there are also some natural herbal remedies that you can use at home. Sniffing essential oils such as peppermint or eucalyptus can help clear your sinus cavities. Steam is also helpful for clearing up the mucus, and you can use a vaporizer or simply boil water to add moisture to the air in your home.
Supplement Your Medicine With Immune Boosters
Keeping your immune system strong during the summer helps it fight cold germs off, but those busy summer days can make it hard to remember to take multiple vitamins. Talk to your pharmacist about compounding your medicine so that you can supplement with known immune boosters such as vitamin C without being overwhelmed by too many pills. Herbal remedies such as Echinacea or menthol can also be added to lotions and salves to increase your body’s ability to fight those awful cold symptoms.
